Evelyn Jay Excellence in Education Award 2012
recognizing outstanding TUSD pre-K through 3rd grade educators who inspire a lifelong love of reading and books
Deadline for nominations: Friday, April 13, 2012 4pm
Evelyn Jay was a beloved Tucson educator whose career of over 50 years included work at nine different schools, touching the minds and lives of thousands of young readers. To celebrate Evelyn Jay’s dedication and passion for teaching reading skills to young learners, EEF and Bud Jay established the annual Evelyn Jay Excellence in Education Award in 2004.
Each spring, three educators working with TUSD students in grades preK-3 are recognized for their exceptional success with young readers. Three cash awards totaling $2,750 are awarded ($1,000 as the top award, with two additional awards of $500 each, as well as $250 for each awardee for classroom reading materials).
Nominations for the Evelyn Jay Award are currently being accepted for 2012. Community members, TUSD colleagues, students, and parents may nominate a TUSD educator (librarian, classroom teacher, or literacy specialist) currently working with students in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, first grade, second grade, and/or third grade by submitting a letter of nomination and application directly to EEF by the deadline of Friday, April 13, 2012. The letter of nomination must be signed by the principal of the educator’s current school site.
Winners are selected from by a committee made up of EEF board members and the EEF executive director with input from the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona. EEF announces winners with a surprise visit to each awardee’s classroom to present his/her award just before the end of the school year.
